Is Sri Lanka Underrated? Here’s Why It Should Be Your Next Destination

Discover why Sri Lanka is one of the most underrated travel destinations, from breathtaking beaches, mountains and waterfalls to unforgettable local experiences. Here’s everything you need to know before you visit!

Sri Lanka is a unique country bursting with incredible people, delicious food, breathtaking landscapes, and rich culture. Whether you’re a beach bum drawn to Unawatuna and Mirissa, a surfer headed for Weligama and the East Coast, a wildlife lover bound for Udawalawe and Yala, or a mountain explorer dreaming of Ella, Sri Lanka has something waiting for you.

The Beaches of the South Coast

After spending just one night in Colombo, we caught a scenic three-hour train ride along the coast to Unawatuna. The journey itself — with the sea crashing just beside the tracks — was unforgettable.

Unawatuna is a perfect mix of local culture with a sprinkle of western comforts. Venture a little off the main beach, and you’ll find areas filled with authentic Sri Lankan food and local life. Closer to the beach? Bars, beach clubs, and international restaurants creates a lively scene.

A Taste of Sri Lankan Home Cooking

After our meal, Wasantha came to chat with her guests, sharing her passion for Lankan cuisine. We ended up joining one of her intimate cooking classes, just us and another family. Learning about Sri Lankan spices, curry preparation, and cooking traditions. It was one of the highlights of our trip. I truly believe that taking a cooking class is one of the best ways to connect with a culture.

Waterfall Adventures in the Mountains

Ella is pure magic — a little mountain town surrounded by lush greenery and waterfalls.

At the top, we found the largest pool — and an unexpected treat; Doctor Fish. These tiny fish nibble the dead skin off your feet — a free, natural pedicure courtesy of Mother Nature.

Why You Should Choose Sri Lanka

If you add Sri Lanka to your travel list, you’ll leave with unforgettable memories, a suitcase full of organic tea, and a heart full of warmth.

More than its beaches, waterfalls, and wildlife, what will truly stay with you is the spirit of the people. Sri Lanka doesn’t just welcome you — it stays with you long after you leave.
